Tribune in 59, Publius Vatinius was Caesar's primary enforcer and helped him push through a massive slate of legislation. Quintus Fufius Calenus, Consul 47 BCE
Переглядів 3 тис.14 днів тому
A long-time ally of Julius Caesar, Calenus was a capable new man who earned his consulship through the many services he rendered unto Caesar. However, his most important contributions came in the wake of the Ides of March, when he squared off against Cicero to determine the Senate's stance as the tensions between Antony and the Assassins mounted. Calenus tried to chart a middle course and altho...

    Hey Mhistory man!..i have an honest to god good question regarding this time period... I couldn't help but notice that the narrative of "the history of the republic's slow transformation into the Empire"... Alot of credible historians blame the "death" of the Republic on alot of people... But none of them from the obstructionist wing from the conservative branch of the Senate.They blame Both Ghacuss bros Marion Pompey Sulla Caesar Anyone pushing Italian Right as demigogs (some did) The best examples (imo) is that when Tiberius Ghraccus was clubbed to death, i heard alot about how Tiberius opeded Pandora's box in so many ways (which he did, ill give them that) but... I dnt see the same level of blame, twords the peope who killed him... Do you agree? Im at least aware that you are aware there was an onbsteuctionnism going on, that was a real problem. Not so much Marious for reforming the army during alife or death struggle against the Germanic tribes, or the Chracci bothersa land reform bills... With thay questions come REAL question im here to ask you sir ...... Was Monarchy the ONLY way to get past the oligarchic obstructionism?

    If you look at the problem on the chessboard at around 13 1/2 minutes you can see that the Muslim guy just put the Christian guy into checkmate. That's presuming that the Muslim guy just made his move which I'm guessing by his raised finger that he did. This has to be the first ever animated chess game summary. Also it is a representative picture so it could not have been done by a Muslim.

    What?! Grant himself admitted that Rosecrans had a good plan in place at Chattanooga and that Grant only carried it out. That admission is in his autobiography if I’m not mistaken. Why all the vitriol? An historian’s first responsibility is to at least be honest, don’t you think? Your opinion is your opinion, and unimportant, but I’m astounded by your cavalier misrepresentation of facts here throughout.

  • @EdwinPutman-io1dl

    Grant lost more battles than he won? That is patently false. I’m not certain that he lost any battles. Cold Harbor? No. He lost a lot more men than he needed to but he didn’t lose the battle. On what terms do you conclude that he lost that battle? Or any other battle he fought? He lost men. Nobody argues that. But he won battles. He beat Lee into submission. And, of course, surrender. Whether you like him or not really has nothing to do with how many battles he won.

    Putting Crassus in E is a travesty. He came out of a cave in Spain, raised an army for Sulla, and later raised the biggest fortune of his time out of very little. He then paved the way for everything accomplished by the first triumvirate and therefore Clodius, Caesar and plenty of other men. His networking and his influence on all parts of Roman society were massive. The only reason to not rank him at least A is Carrhae.

    • @ThersitestheHistorian
      @ThersitestheHistorian 5 днів тому

      I will look more into that when I cover both men. Right now, my impression is that Marcus Junius Brutus was more appealing because he was charming, thoughtful, handsome, "pure" insofar as he was with Pompey but disgusted by the behavior of the Optimates in 49-48, and bore the closest name to the OG tyrannicide. Decimus had served with Caesar and so he was somewhat stained.

    I found one piece of info on my question. It appears that Soviet pows were treated with about the minimum standard of care required by the Geneva and Hague conventions, though only because of political circumstances, not any feelings of mercy or decency. After the battle of Khalkhin Gol. Desmond Ng · Follow Read about its history from its rise to its fall.7y The Soviet POWs captured during the battle were initially held by the Japanese in improvised camps near divisional headquarters. Later, during the Soviet counterattack the prisoners were relocated to prisons located deeper in Manchuria. The Japanese managed to capture Soviet prisoners during their initial attack. In the early stages of the battle, the Japanese had decided to strike first, and launched an assault into Soviet lines. Despite the attacks making little progress and ultimately failing, they managed to capture hundreds of Soviet POWs. They were treated passably. Survivors reported that they were given meager rations, enough to survive, but not much more. Their prisons were also threadbare, with bare cells and only a bed, sink and toilet and only allowed out for daily exercise periods. The Japanese wanted to keep them alive in order to allow negotiations to transition smoothly, so 70% of the POWs survived. (which is pretty damned high for prisoners held by the Japanese).

    I think the threat of japanese subs to supply lines shouldnt be so readly dismissed as sean does. Yeah by 43 US is benfiting from advances made in the atlantic with asw but early years it was just starting to hit the fleet and focused on protecting the battle line and carrier task forces, softer areas would be waiting on these advancments. LONG US supply lines and even the near rear to all these staging islands would have been great targets for japan's sub fleet subs but also its rebuilt carrier air arm at a much better econmy of threat and resutling econmy of losses. Imagin jap subs having a happy time attritting a lot of the built up production and man power on it way to all these early japanese defeats slowing down US advance while rebuilt IJN carrier air forces bloody them selves not on US battle fleets in the marianas and off the phillipeans and instead work up by raiding static rear island targets or slow moving un- lightly defendes convoys and transports in german surface style raids but with carrier strike groups keto-such and such used not in a decisive strikes but in raiding lines of supply. Give time for japanese ground island defense doctrin to develop and be implemented.

    I am an Indian, and Bose is a very interesting figure-a hardcore nationalist and an ardent secularist. He believed in equality but still joined the Nazis because of the "enemy of my enemy" rationale. The British weren't able to execute the mutinying officers because public sentiment was so high. Bose died in a plane crash; however, some say Stalin got him, and he died in a gulag. The conspiracy theories about Bose's fate have filled several books. Today, the right-wing Modi government has captured Bose's legacy. It's fucking funny how every patriot who ever died for this country was a Congress member, yet people still vote for the BJP, which collaborated with the British. Strange times

    As far as Holland Smith is concerned the bigger issue may have been the publicity at the time, there was an Army inquiry into the incident and Smith kicked upstairs to ensure he could never again be in any position to directly coordinate with Army personnel. I read John McManus' series on the Pacific War and his view is that it was less a Marine versus Army problem than a Holland Smith problem that filtered down the ranks so the other marines thought army soldiers didn't fight well.
